about

“Count the Amount” is a musical composition that aims to reset the perceived value of things that have an agreed-upon set value, such as money, through music. The money used in this piece is limited to denominations of 1, 5, 10, 50, 100, and 500 yen coins. It is performed by counting the amounts printed on each coin and producing sounds assigned to each of the six types of coins. (E.g. 1 yen = 1 time, 500 yen = 500 times). The structure of the composition consists of six parts. In the first part, each coin is read, one by one, starting from 1 yen in ascending order. In the second part to fifth part, coins are read two to five coins at a time respectively. In each part, the totals are simultaneously counted aloud from small to large. In the sixth part, all coins are read simultaneously, the count ending on 666. Counting from 1 to 666, there are a total of 63 operations.
